Derived from the Ancient Greek term geōmanteía, meaning "foresight by earth," it is a translation of the Arabic ‛ilm al-raml, or "science of the sand." Historical Greek adaptations of the term incorporated the word raml ("sand") directly, resulting in variants such as rhamplion or rabolion. Additional Arabic terminology includes khatt al-raml and darb al-raml.
